I read the article "ancient methods of navigation" from NEWSELA. People from groups of islands were called Polynesia they lived 3,500 years ago. They used a navigation method, they measured the stars. In the movie, "Moana" she learns how to sail and in one scene she is measuring the stars with her hand. People had to memorize were the stars were. They lined up their thumb with the horizon line and then puts their hand in an L shape. They have to measure Orion ( it is a constellation.) if it is in a certain position you are facing north, east, south, or west. Over the years the stars slowly shift so people had to play close attention to how the stars moved and where they are.
