I read the article "How Do Cats Always Land on All Four Feet?" in Wonderopolis. It turns out that cats do not always land on four feet if the fall is around 12 inches or less. Cats have a very flexible back, a light bone structure, and an instinct that when they fall they automatically know which way is down. So once they know which way is down they shift their body so they will land on all four feet, and their fur also helps soften the landing.
