Pictures are a great way to express how you are feeling. Today on almost all electronic devises with email or instant messaging there are emojis that you can use. Until 1998 everyone had no emojis and just simply used words to communicate. But in Japan in 1998 a man named Shigetaka Kurita invented the first emojis. He worked for a mobile communication company called DoCoMo. He was put to the task of helping make the first mobile internet system. In the first messaging system people were limited to 250 characters so he thought emojis would be a good way to communicate while still using little data. The word emoji means picture (e) character (moji). Soon all different Japanese companies were using emojis. It took a while to get the emojis to spread to other countries though. In 2010 when the emojis had already spread to other countries the different computer companies such as Google, Microsoft, Twitter, and Facebook, could finally develop their own emojis.
